More Brands Bring Manufacturing Back Home

A growing number of apparel and furniture companies are shifting at least part of their production back to domestic factories, reversing a decades-long trend of overseas outsourcing.

Industry analysts point to several converging factors: rising overseas shipping costs, longer lead times that frustrate retailers trying to respond quickly to trends, and growing consumer interest in products labeled "Made Locally." A recent industry survey found that 34 percent of mid-sized apparel brands had reshored at least one product line in the past two years, up from just 9 percent five years ago.

The transition isn't simple. Domestic factories often charge 20 to 40 percent more per unit than overseas competitors, and many brands report difficulty finding workers with specialized sewing or upholstery skills.

Still, several companies say the higher production cost is offset by faster restocking, lower shipping expenses, and a marketing advantage with customers willing to pay a premium for domestically made goods.
