Local Retailer Turns to Automation to Curb Stockouts

CEDAR FALLS — Thornbury Hardware, a family-owned chain with eleven stores across the region, has spent the past year rolling out an automated inventory tracking system after years of losing sales to empty shelves.

Store manager Lena Ortiz says the problem used to be predictable: popular items like garden hoses and paint rollers would sell out during peak season, and by the time staff noticed and reordered, customers had already gone to competitors. 'We were losing customers we'd never get back,' she said.

The new system uses shelf-mounted sensors that alert the central warehouse the moment stock for a given item falls below a set threshold, triggering an automatic reorder. Since the rollout began at three pilot stores in March, out-of-stock incidents at those locations have dropped by 62%.

Company leadership plans to extend the system to all eleven stores by early next year. While the upfront cost of the sensors was significant, executives say the reduction in lost sales has already offset roughly a third of the investment.
